Pedicab or Cycle rickshaws in Jakarta are called becak (pronounced [ˈbɛtʃak]). Becak were considered an icon of the capital city of Jakarta prior to its ban in the 1980s. Citing concerns of public order, the city government forbade them on the city's main streets (Peraturan Daerah Nomor 11 Tahun 1988 tentang Ketertiban Umum di wilayah DKI Jakarta). Despite years of being banned, thousands of becak still operate in kampungs in West, East and mostly North Jakarta,. Attempts at reinforcing the ban resulted in large-scale seizures of the vehicle in the late 1990s and in 2007.
